"Senator Obama was doing press interviews by telephone
in a holding room between events. Sometime later as he
was getting ready to begin his event, he asked me if I was
photographing his shoes. When I said yes, he told me that
he had already had them resoled once since he entered the
race a year earlier. Providence, R.I., 3/1/2008."

In Letter to 'NYT,' Man Who Prosecuted Weather
Underground Hits Linking Ayers to Obama

By Greg Mitchell

Published: October 10, 2008 9:00 AM ET

NEW YORK In a surprising a letter to the editor
published in The New York Times today, the
chief prosecutor of the Weather Underground
in the 1970s expressed outrage over the
linking of Barack Obama to Bill Ayers by the
McCain campaign, adding, "Although I dearly
wanted to obtain convictions against all the
Weathermen, including Bill Ayers, I am very
pleased to learn that he has become a
responsible citizen."

William C. Ibershof also corrects a charge
in the Times: "I do take issue with the
statement in your news article that the
Weathermen indictment was dismissed
because of 'prosecutorial misconduct.'
It was dismissed because of illegal activities,
including wiretaps, break-ins and mail
interceptions, initiated by John N. Mitchell,
attorney general at that time, and W.
Mark Felt, an F.B.I. assistant director."

Felt, of course (you may have already for-
gotten), was also known as a guy called
"Deep Throat."

*
As the lead federal prosecutor of the Weathe-
rmen in the 1970s (I was then chief of the
criminal division in the Eastern District of Michigan
and took over the Weathermen prosecution in 1972),
I am amazed and outraged that Senator Barack
Obama is being linked to William Ayers’s terrorist
activities 40 years ago when Mr. Obama was, as
he has noted, just a child.

Although I dearly wanted to obtain convictions
against all the Weathermen, including Bill Ayers,
I am very pleased to learn that he has become a
responsible citizen.

Because Senator Obama recently served on
a board of a charitable organization with
Mr. Ayers cannot possibly link the senator to
acts perpetrated by Mr. Ayers so many years ago.

I do take issue with the statement in your news
article that the Weathermen indictment was dismissed
because of “prosecutorial misconduct.” It was
dismissed because of illegal activities, including wiretaps,
break-ins and mail interceptions, initiated by John N.
Mitchell, attorney general at that time, and W. Mark
Felt, an F.B.I. assistant director.

Polling...

...and the TRUTH

I received an email this
morning from my good
friend Joan. She loves
her Son and doing the
work of ten people to
defeat Prop 8 in California.

This is my reply:

Joan

There is an almost unknown church in the
world, the church of the Digital god. They
only have one prophet, Pessimities and up
until last week Pessimities had only written
one line, "Blessed is he whom hath made a
backup."

Well last week I discovered a new line,
"Blessed is he whom hath only a cell
phone."

Now let me explain polling. The wise guys
call a statically significant number of land
line owners and ask a set of controlled
questions and then publish/sell their results.
If its a commissioned survey the questions
are very carefully written to evoke the desired
response.

OK, so whats wrong with this methodology?
Well somewhere between 19% and 31% of
all consumers over 18 years of age in the
USA don't use a land line for voice commu-
nication. They do it all with a wireless device
and if they have a land line it's a "dry line", a
land line used only to connect to DSL, there
is no phone connected to the line. There are
a few other little glitches with phone numbers
mined from voter registration lists, you may
have your phone number withheld or an
intentional wrong number on your registration

So the MSM publishes results that ignore
between one fifth to one third of people with
opinions... Lets be generous and say that 25%
of all telcom voice users are untethered, no
wires. We have Polls that have a margin of
error that is published with the results, but
what about the big BIG HOLE, the 25% of the
un-polled elite. Well they get to vote and
unfortunately for the Republicans, the un-polled
elite
is rich in 18 to 30 something voters,
newly registered as Obama Democrats, who
BTW don't give a rats arse if you are straight
or gay, or black or brown, and the economy
is their NUMBER ONE PRIORITY. They just
care about the future and real CHANGE...

So Joan, smile and remember one of my grand-
father's great truisms. "He who laughs last,
never saw the joke to start with."

John McCain and Charles Keating

The Keating 5 scandal

The current economic crisis demands that
we understand John McCain's attitudes
about economic oversight and corporate
influence in federal regulation. Nothing
llustrates the danger of his approach more
clearly than his central role in the savings
and loan scandal of the late '80s and
early '90s.

John McCain was accused of improperly
aiding his political patron, Charles Keating,
chairman of the Lincoln Savings and Loan
Association. The bipartisan Senate Ethics
Committee launched investigations and
formally reprimanded Senator McCain for
his role in the scandal -- the first such
Senator to receive a major party nomination
for president.

At the heart of the scandal was Keating's
Lincoln Savings and Loan Association,
which took advantage of deregulation
in the 1980s to make risky investments
with its depositors' money. McCain
intervened on behalf of Charles Keating
with federal regulators tasked with
preventing banking fraud, and championed
legislation to delay regulation of the savings
and loan industry -- actions that allowed
Keating to continue his fraud at an incredible
cost to taxpayers.

When the savings and loan industry collapsed,
Keating's failed company put taxpayers on
the hook for $3.4 billion and more than
20,000 Americans lost their savings. John
McCain was reprimanded by the bipartisan
Senate Ethics Committee, but the ultimate
cost of the crisis to American taxpayers
reached more than $120 billion.

The Keating scandal is eerily similar to
today's credit crisis, where a lack of
regulation and cozy relationships between
the financial industry and Congress has
allowed banks to make risky loans and
profit by bending the rules. And in both
cases, John McCain's judgment and
values have placed him on the wrong
side of history.
